Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee), whose parents are divorced, lives with his mother in a small town. He is a withdrawn and antisocial child who is also bullied at school. One day, an elderly man (Richard Jenkins) and a girl move into the apartment next door. Owen soon befriends Abby (Chloe Moretz), who is the same age as him. Meanwhile, the town is plagued by strange murders. Owen and Abby quickly develop an emotional bond as they spend time together. However, Owen is unaware of a horrifying truth: Abby is a vampire who needs to feed on blood. When he discovers this, he is devastated but realizes that he loves Abby deeply, regardless of her nature.
